Dear IDeA Community,

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one of 11 Federal agencies that participate in funding Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) to small business concerns. NIH is second only to the Department of Defense in funding SBIR/STTR awards that had a set-aside budget in fiscal year 2012 of $717 million.

The NIH SBIR/STTR Programs provide biomedical and behavioral research and development funding to U.S. small businesses to explore the technological feasibility of innovative projects with commercial potential to create medical solutions for public benefit. The SBIR and STTR programs focus on bridging the gap between basic science and translation of science discovery into tangible products and services. The NIH SBIR/STTR program is comprised of 24 Institutes and Centers that fund SBIR/STTR awards primarily through grants and some contracts. SBIR and STTR companies frequently partner with universities and non-profit research institutions to work towards the goal of developing and commercializing biomedical technology.

A key goal of the programs is to increase the participation from companies in states that are underrepresented in NIH funding, such as the IDeA states. As part of the NIH SBIR/STTR programs increased coordination with the IDeA program, you can expect to see NIH SBIR/STTR staff at future IDeA Regional and National meetings to present on the SBIR/STTR programs, meet with interested parties about the programs, and hopefully make connections to local and regional SBIR/STTR companies as potential collaborators.

Information concerning the NIH SBIR/STTR Programs, funding opportunities, and program material may be found at http://sbir.nih.gov Questions may be sent via Email: sbir@od.nih.gov.

Best regards,
